NTT Com to Assess Latest DDoS Attack-Prevention System

Tokyo

February 25, 2005

NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced today that it would run a trial on a state-of-the-art security system to protect NTT Com Global IP Network against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

In the trial, to be held from March 7 through April 31st, the company will examine the feasibility of technology to detect anomaly traffic in advance and allow only normal traffic into the networks. NTT Com will also develop a cooperative framework in which backbone operators work with their customers to fend off network attacks.

The DDoS attacks are malicious attacks in which several compromised systems attack a single target, causing denial of service for users of the targeted system. The flood of incoming messages to the target system forces it to shut down, thereby denying legitimate users access.

Prompted by demands for security to protect against such attacks, the company has been studying ways to detect and track unauthorized traffic. However, it takes highly advanced IP technology and a lot of time in order to detect and prevent a DDoS attack, so NTT Com will conduct the trial in cooperation with Cisco Systems K.K., Arbor Networks, CloudShield Technologies, and NTT Information Sharing Platform Laboratories.

NTT Com aims to commercialize the security service by summer 2005, after completion of the trial results.
