NTT Resonant is a company that operates a portal called "goo" and provides various Internet-based services such as e-learning. In particular, goo offers many services and functions that are useful in everyday life, such as a search engine, dictionaries, maps, transit information, news and a shopping mall. The company also provides a large variety of services to support communication among users, such as "goo Blog," "goo Home," a social networking service (SNS), and "Oshiete! goo," a question and answer service. Through the goo Blog service, over 1 million people have already created their own blogs. Users of goo Blog have rapidly increased since around 2005, being attracted to its huge storage space for image files (one of the largest in the industry), which allows users to post many images on their blogs. However, providing space for a large number of images has led to an increase in server load. "The possibility of a sharp degradation in server performance was constantly worrying us," said Mr. Satoshi Osato in the Media Department, looking back those days.

"Although we experienced no incidents that disturbed customers, we were always anxious about the possible deterioration in server performance. Then we decided to reduce the load on the origin server by deploying a cache server on our network."
However, server load increased so fast that the company could not keep up with it solely by adding more cache servers. After looking for a radical solution, NTT Resonant decided to introduce Smart Content Delivery (SCD).
